Truck dumb

They seem pretty par for the course from what I've been seeing. I was looking at 250/2500 HD diesels in the $20,000 range and found a ton!

I'd suggest you get a 3/4 ton pickup (F-250 or Chevy 2500)

One you start pulling stuff, you will realize how heavy things get.............quick.

 

Definitely!!! My F150 pulled a two horse no problem, but not the greatest when 2 horses were in it! :laugh:

True true.
But, you have to make sure you factor everything in. If you're only pulling a two or three horse, mostly aluminum/fiberglass trailer with an electronic braking system you'll more than likely be fine with a 1500.

 

You have to think about the weight/Suspension to.

Having a breaking system on your trialer is a nice thing...........but when you load up that trailer.......you will definately notice the differance bettween a .5 ton and a .75 ton pickup!

 

7.4 L would be a diesel wouldn't it? Never heard of that one in a gas...

 

It is a gas............Chevy thing.

 

It IS a gasser, but that's a big block! I got one of those in my suburban - MAYBE 11 miles a gallon!
Whereas my F350 diesel gets 15.

 

Ahh, old fart gas thing!

Nowadays it's either puny little gassers or monster gassers, nothing in the middle.

Our truck has a 8.1L and gets about 6 miles to the gallon NOT being in tow haul mode with the trailer and ONE horse : BUT you don't even know the trailer is there ;D.

 

5.4, 5.7s? A nice small block is in the middle! DO NOT KNOCK THE SMALL BLOCK.

Diesel motors will run forEVER!!!! Better mileage when towing too.
Can't get a diesel unless you buy more truck than a 1500.
Get 25 or 3500 and if you can, get a long bed. That way you're not restricted on type of trailer you end up purchasing.
Factory installed - then you know it's done right. Can't tell you HOW many people we got in out shop (when I sold truck accessories) that needed their hitch redone cuz some goof at another shop didn't use the right bolts, all the bolts, didn't bolt correctly to the frame, yada, yada, yada!

Buy the truck first. Cuz then you know what you'll be capable of pulling.

 

IMHO, yes. Higher gas milage, longer engine life, more torque, and now that gas prices are rising again, it's more cost effective in the long run.

Higher if you're routinely planning on ahuling more than one horse, or have a heavier trailer and/or no brake system.

Yes, just for the simple fact that the wriring is a pain in the ass.

Buy the truck first since it's (usually) the more expensive of the two and you know what you have to work with power wise.
