I've been thinking lately.... Who trains gaited horses? I don't think I know of anyone in my area that does it. I'd love to take my guy to a trainer and have them work with me AND my horse TOGETHER. For a while I've thought going into a few flat shod classes would be cool - but I have NO clue where to start. My guy could use the discipline. Tell me what ya got!

I have a wonderful Gaited Horse trainer. Her name is Susan Brown. She uses Natural Horsemanship methods for teaching and is very knowledgable about the gaited breeds. I would actually like to take lessons to learn how to ride mine correctly. I took him out to a trainer about a year and 1/2 ago, and rode him around her arena, and was kinda repremanded cause I wasn't doing ANYTHING right. Well, didn't I feel like a complete idiot. He's a trail horse, not a show horse. I'd never had a gaited horse before. But I did learn that I can make it more comfortable for me, when I ride the way she told me to. With him being draft as well, his gait isn't nearly as smooth as Drifter's is.
The thing is...........I live no where near any of these people. :'( :'( It sucks! My biggest problem is, Drifter is quite opinionated (as some of you have seen) and when he doesn't want to do something he either stops dead - or backs up! I HATE the backing up. I also hate that I have to harshly thump him in the sides (sometimes several times) to get him to stop it. I don't use spurs - I've never been taught to use them and I won't just put them on without knowing the proper way to use them!!! (see that is just silly 'ol me, wanting to know how and why things work, BEFORE I use them : ) He FREAKS if I actually try ridding with a whip or bat - that right now is out of the question - he is better - but I respect the fragility of my life..... :slapfight: so no whips...........yet (I can now let him see me carry them around >) I want a person familiar with gaited horses..........for many reasons! If anyone thinks of anyone else, feel free to post..........or if you hear of any gaited clinics coming up!

She writes articles and has published a book or two on training-------- LOTS of despooking clinics -------------damn I can't remember
I know of a few people who had BAD BAD experiences there at her farm. Golden Gaits Stable. She is all about making money and will drag out lessons and training so she makes more money when it doesn't warrant it. It isn't about the progresses you make it's about how long she can make a buck off you. I strongly suggest Susan. Give her a call and tell her Julie sent you and she might be able to work out a deal where she comes by you. I do know she travels but just how far, I'm not sure.
Tbitt Give Marilyn 30 days. You will see progress! She may be in the boonies but she knows her shit and she has been in the TWH world for OVER 30 years. She also has a wonderful shoer.

Tbitt- I completely agree with you. The trainer I want to use is all the way up in Madison WI for my new guy for trail riding. Hell I'd pay any of you trail riders to take him and ride him everywhere so he gets used to different things. Not spooky, just inexperienced. I can't due to my back----I'm not taking the risk of a green horse. I trust my WP horse completely! I am going to take him out this spring and work his brain past the arena settings he is used to. Good luck finding the right trainer----I have been searching myself and it is a huge project, you just can't know what they do no matter how many references you get.
Would love to have Susan Brown as a trainer as she is really close to me but I can't afford to take lessons from her. Maybe someday. Met Julie Reily can't say that I ever want to meet her again. She's not someone that I would want to take my money out of my hands.

She said I might be able to help you. I am friends with Marilyn Altman (see previous posts). She's a great lady! The difference between her and me is she's a show person, I'm a trail person. I have shown a little, but I am not a competitive person. I strive for excellence with my horse, for the purpose of enjoying perfect harmony with him, on a beautiful trail ride with great friends. I've ridden thousands of very rugged trail miles throughout the Midwest at many of the organized rides, and many local preserves. I am located near Elgin, IL outside of Chicago and have 30 years of experience with horses. I train the horse, AND teach the rider how to train, using a Natural Horsemanship approach. I want YOU to have the KNOWLEDGE of how to ride and train your own horse. Often I train the horse first, as needed, to get them started, then show the rider how to do it. As an example, I'll teach you how to give the horse a very soft mouth using pressure and release. I can also teach you on MY well trained gaited horses, so you can see how it should work and practice on them first. Get the idea and hang of it on my horse, then teach it to your own. There are different ways that we can work through the distance and boarding cost issues. One idea is I can give a client a "personal two-day clinic". You could trailer in to our barn (see www.indianhillsstables.com), and put your horse up overnight for $20/nite for stall (always available). We could spend two or three hours each day to work with your horse and you. My normal rates are $50/hr. I can offer you a package price of $200 for 4 hours in two days, or $250 for 6 hrs in two days, stall included. If you want to bring a spouse or friend to audit, no charge. We have two huge indoor arenas, so you don't need to wait til spring. After we're done, you can ride the trails on our property all you wish. If several of you wished to set up a group clinic, we can talk about further discounts. Day rates for a stall are $10. Contact me if you'd like to discuss different possible arrangements. Everyone has their favorite trainer-----AND those with bad experiences Golden Gaits is always busy, Julie does alot of clinics that fill up, she teaches-----that is all I know about her but looking at the amount of business she has I would recommend her. What I am going to do is meet with the trainer, talk to owners of horses being trained and watch a few workouts, I plan on appearing with no notice to watch. How else do you figure out who to use?
I agree with you MyTeDun on your last post. Show up un-announced more than once and see what the place is like, see how the horses are cared for, watch some lessons, and talk to other boarders. I found that, that very advice helped me out a lot. I'm one of those "picky" horse owners who only wants the very best for my horse and me. I'm no where near a great rider but do appreciate what I have learned thus far with my horse. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I appreciate those who share theirs. By doing so helps others.
