Students called last night and said they believed one of our mares to be in premature labor. I drove out to find her cast against the wall with amnion hanging out. Flipped her over and me and the prof. felt around. 2 legs stuck back and head back as well. Spent a lot of time trying to adjust dystocia. Once we got the head, we were able to pull a leg and she delivered a stillborn colt. She was two and a half months premature.

And after almost four hours, 3 doses of oxytocin, and a water/beatadine lavage, she passed the placenta. Mare is doing fine this morning. Just (I imagine) sore.

that is a shame and no way to start the season. although it was probably easier on her to deliver it early than full term with all that malpositioning, etc

That's heartbreaking and a real bummer. Let's hope that the rest of foaling season for everyone is a good one.
